Position: OPERATIONS MANAGER

This role reports directly to the General Manager

Site Location: Johannesburg


About the Role

We are looking for a highly disciplined, commercially driven, and client-focused Operations Manager to oversee and optimise performance across multiple warehousing sites within a key retail environment.


This role is critical in driving client satisfaction, operational excellence, profitability, and workforce performance, while ensuring full compliance with contractual, safety, and organisational standards.


The ideal candidate will have strong leadership capability, financial understanding, and the ability to operate in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment where service delivery and continuous improvement are essential.

Key Performance Areas

 

Client Satisfaction & Service Delivery

  • Build and maintain strong client relationships
  • Conduct regular operational and service review meetings
  • Ensure SLA and quality standards are consistently met
  • Follow up on site audits and implement corrective actions
  • Drive contract retention and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Identify and eliminate operational inefficiencies

Financial Performance & Profitability

  • Manage and control site Gross Profit (GP%)
  • Analyse financial reports and identify improvement opportunitie
  • Control labour costs, direct expenses, and overheads
  • Support budgeting and forecasting processes
  • Drive cost optimisation initiatives

Sales & Business Growth

  • Identify opportunities for new business and site expansion
  • Drive upselling within existing client operations
  • Support operational readiness for growth initiatives

Human Resources & Workforce Management

  • Manage recruitment, staffing, and workforce planning
  • Oversee employee relations and industrial relations matters
  • Conduct performance appraisals for Service Managers and supervisors
  • Manage leave, absenteeism, and labour turnover
  • Drive training, development, and multi-skilling initiatives
  • Ensure compliance with company policies and procedures

Debtors & Revenue Control

  • Ensure accurate invoicing processes
  • Manage debtor collections and cash flow performance

Risk, Safety & SHERQ Compliance

  • Ensure full compliance with OHS Act and safety standards
  • Drive reporting of incidents, near misses, and risks
  • Conduct monthly risk assessments and implement corrective actions
  • Maintain high standards of safety, quality, and compliance across sites

Reporting, Administration & Compliance

  • Compile monthly regional and client reports (KPIs, audits, performance trends)
  • Ensure accurate data reporting (Excel / Power BI)
  • Maintain operational, HR, and compliance documentation
  • Oversee site audits, safety reports, and KPI presentations

Innovation & Continuous Improvement

  • Identify opportunities to improve productivity and efficiency
  • Implement new ideas, systems, and operational improvements
  • Review and enhance SOPs and performance measures

Team Support & General Responsibilities

  • Support site leadership and management teams
  • Participate in operational and strategic planning discussions
  • Work extended hours where operationally required
  • Perform additional duties within the scope of the role

Minimum Requirements

  • Matric / Grade 12
  • Relevant qualification in Operations / Logistics (advantageous)
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a multi-site operations management role
  • Warehousing / logistics industry experience (essential)
  • Strong financial and commercial understanding
  • Experience in labour relations and workforce management

Environmental or Other Conditions
